BM: Prostate study:   Example of visualization employed in prostate cancer treatment planning.

Top window is a perspective view of the conformal beam under design (transparent red), focussed on prostate tumor volume (red). Also shown are the patient external surface (transparent white), pelvis (yellow), femur heads (orange), vertbrae (green), and spinal cord (pink).

Bottom left window is a Beam's Eye View (view from the beam source) with the beam field contour auto-generated to fit the tumor with a 1.5 cm margin at beam isocenter, and a multi-leaf collimator auto-fitted to this contour (leaves shown in green).

Bottom right is the Room's Eye View, showing orientation of the treatment machine gantry, collimator, and couch, selected patient structures, and an axial CT slice (CTs can be displayed in any window).

The user interacts with Beam's Eye View to move patient under the beam. During interaction, the MLC leaves automatically adjust to fit the tumor with the specified margin, beam orientation and shape are updated in Perspective and Room's Eye View, and Room's Eye View shows changing gantry and couch positions. To insure interactive response, multiple levels of geometry simplification are automatically engaged as required.
